The First Church of Christ, Scientist sits on one of the most valuable pieces of property in downtown West Palm Beach. Considered the “hood ornament” of the city, this site serves as the eastern gateway to West Palm Beach. It is alarming to learn that the building, once called the most beautiful in the city by the Architecture Editor for the New York Times, is not landmarked and risks demolition by future projects. By right, a future landowner of the property can demolish the Church and build their project from street to street with limited greenspace and no rezoning requirements.
Related’s solution to this dilemma falls within its proposed Class-A office building project. The church will be landmarked and Related would create an endowment fund to preserve the church and maintain the structure in perpetuity. The congregation could afford to remain in place and continue weekly services in the tradition of the past 89 years. Co-managed by Related, the Church and the City of West Palm Beach, this endowment fund would forever preserve the church, no matter what occurs within the congregation or at Related Companies.
